When the body becomes sleep deprived it looks for energy from another source and this usually comes in the form of food. Studies have shown that a person not getting enough sleep will tend to take in an additional 500 calories per day. At the end of the week, that is 1lb worth of calories (500 calories x 7 days = 3500 calories = 1lb). So going to bed earlier will not only help you to feel better but also assist you in your weight loss goals!
Here are some helpful tips on how to sleep better:
- Spend the last 1-2 hours before bed in a restful way. Don’t stay up all night watching TV or reading on your iPad. Slow down and rest by taking a bath, reading a book, or listen to calming music.
- Turn off the lights. The body requires some level of darkness to produce melatonin, the neurotransmitter that helps you sleep. So turn off the bright lights and spend that time before bed with just enough light to enjoy your restful activities.
- Avoid caffeine. Not getting enough sleep can make you crave more caffeine, so it’s easy to get in a vicious cycle.
Bottom line, sleep is freaking important, and you should get more of it!
